A small starting guide
A simple session for exploring simple decorative stitching and paper pattern plans, with room for your own observations.
A modest beginning
Keep a notebook and a familiar sewing kit nearby and begin with stitched lines. Choose a small question about simple decorative stitching and paper pattern plans rather than trying to cover the whole subject at once.
Work with a small piece of cloth or a paper diagram before planning a large project. Observe the direction of threads and the way the surface bends. Use a familiar textile technique for any practical sample. A clear record of material, sample size and visible structure makes it possible to compare results later.
A five-step session
Use this temporary checklist during one session. It clears when the page is reloaded.

Make the note your own
Look at both faces of the sample and draw the edge as well as the center. Repeated patterns become easier to understand when you mark one complete repeat. Keep actual thread or fabric labels with your notes. A useful swatch page includes what changed, what stayed the same and one question for the next sample.
Choose a first page
A stitched path sketch gives you a concrete exercise. You can also browse the whole journal and begin with the subject closest to hand.
